Technical assessment of photovoltaic systems in Spain
Solar power is especially attractive in the Canary Islands. But a system isn’t automatically well designed just because it produces electricity.
I help with the technical assessment of existing PV systems, with fault-finding, and with evaluating system concepts — particularly when there are problems, uncertainties, or doubts about whether the work was carried out correctly.

Not every PV system is as good as it looks
Technical faults aren’t always visible from the outside
A photovoltaic system can be working and still have technical defects.
In existing systems, problems can occur with, for example:
- DC wiring
- connectors
- earthing and equipotential bonding
- surge protection
- inverter
- battery storage
- AC distribution
- protective measures
- cable sizing
- documentation
- installation and workmanship
Especially for systems that have been installed by different companies or extended over several years, an independent technical assessment is worthwhile.
Inspecting an existing PV system
Even if the system works, that doesn’t automatically mean everything is fine
I inspect existing systems in particular when:
- the system already shows defects or malfunctions
- the inverter regularly reports errors
- the expected output isn’t being reached
- the system is to be extended or modified
- a battery is to be retrofitted
- a house is being sold or bought
- it’s unclear how a previous installation was carried out
- there are doubts about whether the work was done correctly
This isn’t just about whether the system produces electricity, but also about whether it was designed and installed in a technically sound and safe way.
PV systems and surge protection
AC and DC need to be looked at together
Surge protection plays a particular role in photovoltaic systems.
In addition to the AC side, the DC side between the PV array and the inverter must also be taken into account.
Depending on the system, this can include, among other things:
- DC surge protection
- AC surge protection
- earthing
- equipotential bonding
- cable routing
- inverter
- the overall protection concept of the system
Solar power and battery storage
Getting more out of your own solar energy
PV systems are increasingly being combined with battery storage.
For an existing system, it can therefore be worth checking whether:
- the inverter and battery are compatible
- the existing system can be extended
- the battery’s power has been sensibly sized
- the energy management is working correctly
- the existing electrical installation is suitable
Especially with older systems, an extension shouldn’t simply be planned based on available space or existing PV output alone.
Grid-connected or off-grid system?
Two different concepts
Not every photovoltaic system works the same way.
With a grid-connected system, the PV system is connected to the public electricity grid. Depending on the system and the relevant contract, excess energy can be fed into the grid.
An off-grid system, on the other hand, operates independently of the public grid and requires a suitably designed setup of generation, storage, and inverter.
There are also hybrid systems, which combine the grid, PV, and battery storage.
The technical planning and requirements differ considerably depending on the system.
Checking a PV system before buying
A PV inspection can also be worthwhile when buying a property
An existing photovoltaic system can add significant value to a property — or turn into a problem later on.
Before buying, it can be worth checking, for example:
- Which components are actually installed?
- How old are the panels and the inverter?
- Is the system technically sound and well designed?
- Are there any visible defects?
- Is the documentation complete?
- How is the system connected to the house’s electrical network?
- Is there battery storage?
- How is the feed-in handled?
- Are extensions possible?
I don’t install every PV system myself
Independent technical assessment instead of a sales interest
My focus isn’t on selling as many photovoltaic systems as possible.
I mainly support the technical assessment, fault-finding, inspection, and optimization of existing systems, as well as the evaluation of planned systems.
I only take on a complete new installation in selected cases.
This allows the technical assessment to be carried out independently of any particular manufacturer or sales interest.
