Overtension protection

Why important?

Here are some good reasons:

  • It is required since 2010 to have an Overtension Protection installed in your distribution box. This is the spanish norm:

Consejería de Empleo, Industria y Comercio 2357 ORDEN de 16 de abril de 2010, por la que seaprueban las Normas Particulares para las Instalaciones de Enlace, en el ámbito de suministro de Endesa Distribución Eléctrica, S.L.U.y Distribuidora Eléctrica del Puerto de La Cruz, S.A.U., en el territorio de la Comunidad Autónoma de Canarias.

12. DISPOSITIVOS GENERALES DE MANDO Y PROTECCIÓN.

Se atenderá a lo dispuesto en la ITC-BT-17. Será obligatoria la instalación de un dispositivo de protección contra sobretensiones, tanto transitorias como permanentes, siendo opcional para el titular de la instalación el que sea con reconexión automática al restablecerse las condiciones normales del servicio.

  • According to our recent experience, insurance companies do not cover damage anymore caused by an overtension, if there is no overtension protection installed in your distribution box.
  • Overtension protection protects your electrical appliances against permanent overtension and voltage peaks. One might think that an overtension protection is only necessary when lightening strikes and since here are few thunderstorms, an overtension protection is of no major need. However quite often occur overtensions caused by faults in the grid of the Endesa.

An overtension protection protects your electrical appliances in the following way:

    • Short voltage peaks, which can often be over 1000 Volts, will be directed to the earth.
    • Permanent overtension: overtension accidentially caused in the grid of the Endesa can easily give you 400 Volt instead of 230 Volt in a socket outlet over a longer period of time. In such a case the overtension protection turns your powersupply off until the fault is repaired.
  • The overtension protection protects against several electrical faults that would normally trip the residual current device.
  • Multiple socket outlets with an overtension protection included can trip the residual current device and cause disruptions. The overtension protection that is installed in the distribution box cannot cause these disruptions because it is installed before the residual current device.
